Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the body (after calcium). It's a component of ATP, DNA, RNA, and phospholipid cell membranes. Deficiency is rare (abundant in diet — meat, dairy, grains). EXCESS phosphorus (from processed food phosphate additives) is the real concern — high serum phosphorus accelerates vascular calcification and is independently associated with cardiovascular mortality. CKD patients must restrict phosphorus. Supplementation is only indicated in refeeding syndrome, chronic alcoholism, and rare genetic conditions. Most people get 2-3x the RDA from diet. --- *Reviewed by the Dose AI Research Team and Clinical Advisory Board* *Last updated: 2026-04-06*
