Molybdenum
MODERATE EVIDENCEMineralLast updated
AVELOR SUMMARY
Molybdenum is an essential trace mineral required for 4 enzymes: sulfite oxidase, xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase, and mARC. Deficiency is extremely rare (adequate in most diets). The primary clinical relevance: sulfite oxidase deficiency causes sulfite sensitivity (headaches from wine, dried fruits). Molybdenum cofactor deficiency is a fatal genetic disorder. Dose: 45μg/day (RDA). Toxicity threshold is high (>10mg/day). Most people get adequate molybdenum from legumes and grains. Supplementation only needed in specific sulfite sensitivity or suspected deficiency.
