Thiamine is essential for pyruvate dehydrogenase (glucose metabolism) and transketolase (pentose phosphate pathway). Deficiency causes beriberi (wet/dry) and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (alcoholism). High-dose thiamine (100-300mg/day) improved fatigue in IBD patients. Allithiamine and benfotiamine are fat-soluble forms with better absorption. Metformin, loop diuretics, and chronic alcohol deplete thiamine. RDA: 1.1-1.2mg/day. --- *Reviewed by the Dose AI Research Team and Clinical Advisory Board* *Last updated: 2026-04-06*
