Taurine

MODERATE EVIDENCEAmino AcidLast updated

SCAN DOSE SUMMARY

Taurine is the most abundant free amino acid in the human body (70g total — more than any other amino acid), concentrated in the heart, brain, and retina. It is NOT a stimulant despite being in every energy drink — it's actually an INHIBITORY neuromodulator that may counteract caffeine's jitteriness. A landmark 2023 Science paper found that taurine supplementation extended lifespan by 10-12% in mice, reversed age-related metabolic decline, and improved healthspan markers — the strongest longevity signal of any amino acid supplement. Our research shows additional evidence for cardiovascular protection (reduced blood pressure by 3.4 mmHg in meta-analysis) and exercise performance.

WHAT IT DOES

Taurine has 5 distinct mechanisms: (1) osmoregulation — regulates cell volume and hydration (the primary function in most cells); (2) bile acid conjugation — taurocholic acid is essential for fat digestion and cholesterol excretion; (3) calcium homeostasis — modulates sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca²⁺ release in cardiac and skeletal muscle, improving contractile function; (4) antioxidant — scavenges hypochlorous acid (HOCl) produced by immune cells, reducing inflammatory tissue damage; (5) neuromodulation — acts on glycine and GABA-A receptors as an inhibitory transmitter. The longevity mechanism (Science 2023) appears to involve mitochondrial taurine modification (5-taurinomethyluridine in mt-tRNA), which improves mitochondrial protein synthesis efficiency.

OPTIMAL DOSAGE

  • Look for: L-taurine; 1-3g per serving; pharmaceutical grade; no unnecessary fillers
  • Avoid: Energy drinks as primary source (1g taurine but excessive sugar/caffeine); products <500mg per serving; "taurine blend" with undisclosed amounts
  • Minimum effective dose: 1g/day for general health; 3g/day for exercise
  • Third-party tested brands: NOW Foods, Thorne, Nutricost (bulk powder), Life Extension
