Methionine
MODERATE EVIDENCEAmino AcidLast updated
AVELOR SUMMARY
L-methionine is an essential amino acid and the body's primary methyl donor (via SAMe). It's also the precursor to cysteine → glutathione. PARADOX: methionine restriction extends lifespan in animal models (methionine restriction activates autophagy and reduces IGF-1), but methionine supplementation supports methylation, detoxification, and antioxidant synthesis. High methionine intake (without adequate B6, B12, folate) raises homocysteine (cardiovascular risk). Used therapeutically for: liver detoxification (200-1,000mg/day) and UTI prevention (urinary acidifier at 500mg 3x/day).
