L-serine is a non-essential amino acid that is emerging as a neuroprotective compound. A 2016 Phase I trial found 15-30g/day L-serine slowed ALS progression by 85% (vs historical controls) — now in Phase IIb trials. The mechanism: L-serine prevents misincorporation of L-BMAA (a neurotoxic amino acid from cyanobacteria linked to ALS) into proteins. Also: precursor to D-serine (NMDA co-agonist — essential for synaptic plasticity) and phosphatidylserine. High dietary serine correlates with lower Alzheimer's risk. Dose: 15-30g/day for neurodegeneration (high dose); 500-3,000mg/day as supplement. --- *Reviewed by the Dose AI Research Team and Clinical Advisory Board* *Last updated: 2026-04-06*
