L-Histidine

MODERATE EVIDENCEAmino AcidLast updated

SCAN DOSE SUMMARY

L-histidine is a conditionally essential amino acid and precursor to histamine (via histidine decarboxylase). Carnosine (beta-alanine + histidine) is the intracellular pH buffer in muscle. L-histidine supplementation (4g/day) improved hemoglobin in CKD patients (histidine is often deficient in renal disease). Also: zinc absorption enhancer (histidine chelates zinc for transport). Not commonly supplemented alone — usually obtained from carnosine or dietary protein. --- *Reviewed by the Dose AI Research Team and Clinical Advisory Board* *Last updated: 2026-04-06*
