Panax ginseng is the most studied adaptogen in the world, with over 5,000 published studies. Our research shows moderate-to-strong evidence for cognitive function enhancement, erectile dysfunction, immune modulation, and fatigue reduction. A key RCT found it improved working memory and cognitive performance within 4 hours of a single 400mg dose. Important to distinguish from American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) and Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus) — they are different plants with different evidence profiles.
Ginseng's ginsenosides (triterpenoid saponins) are pharmacologically versatile: (1) Rb1 and Rg1 modulate the HPA axis — reducing cortisol during stress and increasing it when needed — the classic "adaptogenic" mechanism; (2) Rg3 enhances nitric oxide production — supporting erectile function and blood flow; (3) Rb1 improves insulin signaling; (4) ginsenosides cross the blood-brain barrier and modulate cholinergic, GABAergic, and dopaminergic neurotransmission. Korean red ginseng (steamed) converts some ginsenosides to more bioactive forms (Rg3, Rk1, compound K). Fermented ginseng further improves absorption.
