DGL
MODERATE EVIDENCESupplementLast updated
AVELOR SUMMARY
DGL is licorice root with glycyrrhizin REMOVED — eliminating the compound that causes hypertension and hypokalemia. What remains: flavonoids and saponins that increase gastric mucin production and prostaglandin E2 — protecting the stomach lining. A 1978 study found DGL was as effective as cimetidine (Tagamet) for gastric ulcer healing. Must be CHEWED (not swallowed) — the flavonoids mix with saliva and contact the esophageal/gastric mucosa directly. GutGard® is a standardized DGL with clinical data. Dose: 380-760mg chewed 20 minutes before meals.
