Celery seed extract contains 3-n-butylphthalide (3nB) — a compound that reduces blood pressure through a unique mechanism: it relaxes smooth muscle in arterial walls by reducing catecholamine production in the adrenal gland. A pilot study found celery seed extract (150mg/day) reduced systolic BP by 8.2 mmHg and diastolic by 8.5 mmHg over 6 weeks. Also has mild diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects. The original discovery was made at the University of Chicago when a researcher noticed his father's BP dropped after eating celery. --- *Reviewed by the Dose AI Research Team and Clinical Advisory Board* *Last updated: 2026-04-06*
