Beta-Glucans

STRONG EVIDENCESupplementLast updated April 2026

SCAN DOSE SUMMARY

Beta-glucans are polysaccharides found in oats, mushrooms, and yeast with strong evidence for cholesterol reduction (oat-derived) and immune modulation (mushroom/yeast-derived). Different sources have entirely different mechanisms — oat beta-glucans lower cholesterol via bile acid binding, while yeast/mushroom beta-glucans activate innate immune cells.

EVIDENCE GRADES

LDL cholesterol reduction (oat)Strong — FDA health claim approved (PMID: 21631511)
A
Immune stimulation (yeast/mushroom)Moderate — consistent immunological effects
B
Post-surgical infection preventionModerate — hospital-based trials
B-
Blood sugar regulation (oat)Moderate
B-
Cancer adjunct (mushroom)Preliminary — mostly Asian trials
C+

WHAT IT DOES

Beta-glucans are glucose polymers with β-1,3 and β-1,6 glycosidic linkages. Source determines function:

  • Oat/barley β-glucans: Soluble fiber that forms viscous gel in the GI tract, binding bile acids and reducing cholesterol reabsorption. Also slows glucose absorption.
  • Mushroom β-glucans (reishi, maitake, shiitake, turkey tail): Bind Dectin-1 and complement receptor 3 on macrophages and NK cells, activating innate immune surveillance.
  • Yeast β-glucans (Saccharomyces cerevisiae): Most potent immune activators; used in Wellmune WGP branded ingredient.

OPTIMAL DOSAGE

  • Cholesterol (oat): 3g/day minimum (FDA health claim threshold)
  • Immune support (yeast): 250-500mg/day
  • Immune support (mushroom): 200-500mg/day of standardized extract
  • Take oat beta-glucans with meals for cholesterol and glucose benefits

DRUG INTERACTIONS

ImmunosuppressantsSevere

Beta-glucans stimulate immune cells — opposes immunosuppression

Diabetes medicationsModerate

Oat beta-glucans slow glucose absorption; additive effect

Cholesterol medications (statins)Minor

Additive cholesterol lowering — beneficial but monitor

SAFETY PROFILE

Drug Interactions

Side Effects

  • Bloating and gas (oat-derived, due to fermentation)
  • Generally very well tolerated

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Dietary beta-glucans (from oats, mushrooms) are safe. Supplemental yeast beta-glucans lack specific pregnancy data.

WADA Status

Not Prohibited

HOW SCAN DOSE SCORES THIS

Source identification critical: oat vs mushroom vs yeast serve different purposes
Products should specify β-glucan content, not just "mushroom extract"
Oat products below 3g/day don't qualify for FDA cholesterol claim
Autoimmune/immunosuppressant users get automatic flag for immune-stimulating forms
