Artichoke leaf extract is one of the better-evidenced digestive supplements, with a 2015 meta-analysis confirming significant LDL reduction (-18.7 mg/dL) and a large German study showing 71% of IBS patients reported improvement. The active compounds (cynarin and chlorogenic acid) stimulate bile production and flow (choleretic effect), directly improving fat digestion. Our research shows it also has hepatoprotective and lipid-lowering effects through a unique mechanism — AMPK activation in hepatocytes, similar to berberine but milder.
Artichoke leaf contains cynarin (dicaffeoylquinic acid) and chlorogenic acid that: (1) stimulate bile acid synthesis and secretion from hepatocytes (choleretic effect) — more bile = better fat emulsification and digestion; (2) activate AMPK in the liver — increasing fatty acid β-oxidation and reducing cholesterol synthesis (mild statin-like + metformin-like effect); (3) inhibit HMG-CoA reductase — direct cholesterol synthesis reduction; (4) provide potent antioxidant activity — protecting hepatocytes from oxidative damage (cynaropicrin and luteolin). The IBS improvement is attributed to improved fat digestion (many IBS patients have bile acid malabsorption as a contributing factor).
